Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle can Effectively Prevent Stroke

Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death, killing an estimated 17 million people each year worldwide.

A healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk of many health problems. The latest stroke prevention guidelines point out that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an effective means of preventing stroke.

An unhealthy lifestyle may increase your risk of stroke including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, diabetes, heavy drinking, smoking, high salt, and a high-fat diet, and lack of exercise.

Living a healthy lifestyle by getting plenty of exercise and eating a nutritious diet are the keys to preventing stroke and heart disease.

The stroke prevention guidelines were jointly developed by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. This was the first update of the stroke prevention guidelines in the United States since 2006.

The new guidelines say that if people maintain a healthy lifestyle, people's risk of stroke can be reduced by 80%. The so-called healthy lifestyle refers to not smoking, maintaining a normal weight, eating more fruits and vegetables, maintaining normal blood pressure, and preventing excessive cholesterol levels.

The new guidelines also redefine the matters that doctors should pay attention to when diagnosing and treating stroke patients, including early prevention, timely diagnosis, and accurate medication.

Larry Bruce Goldstein of Duke University, the stroke expert responsible for the development of the guidelines, said that the new guidelines apply to all types of stroke. In dealing with the problem of stroke, various treatments are not as effective as maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
