The Importance of Sustainable Development Goals - An Overview

Sustainable development is the process of developing land, cities, and communities as well as businesses.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of global goals that relate to many areas, such as climate, peace, economy, justice, poverty, and other global concepts.

What are Sustainable Development Goals: Why SDGs are So Important?

Overview
Sustainable development is the process of developing land, cities, and communities as well as businesses, provided that they meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

The world faces the threat of environmental degradation, which must be overcome, without abandoning the needs of economic development as well as equality and social justice.

Sustainable development requires improving the living conditions of all people without increasing the use of natural resources beyond the planet's resilience.

Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, are a group of 17 global targets agreed in 2015 for the year 2030 by the United Nations General Assembly.

These 17 goals are based on successes in achieving the MDGs and they also include new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, and promotion of innovation, sustainable consumption, peace, and justice, among other priorities.
These global goals can be summarized as follows:
  • Eradicate poverty and hunger.
  • Provide clean water and clean sanitation.
  • People have access to quality education.
  • People can enjoy good health and well-being.
  • Achieve gender equality and reduce different discrimination.
  • Accomplish various partnerships to achieve the goals.
  • Develop the economy and secure decent work.
  • Attention to climate, wildlife, and marine life.
  • Responsible consumption and production.
  • Clean energy at affordable prices.
  • Achieving peace and justice.
  • Pay attention to infrastructure, promote innovation, promote the industry.
  • Establish sustainable cities and communities.
Note: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are based on the so-called Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that have been achieved between 2000 and 2015.
All SDGs are based on four themes: environmental, social, economic, and partnerships. SDGs have 169 sub-targets and 233 indicators.

The Importance of the Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals are a global call to action to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Sustainable Development Goals are interlinked - the key to success in achieving one goal is often to address issues that are closely linked to other goals.

The SDGs require working in partnership and in a practical way so that today we can make the right choices to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations.

SDGs provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt in accordance with their priorities, taking into account the environmental challenges faced by the entire world.

Environmental problems are issues of sustainable development that are difficult to deal with or even overcome obstacles to achieving the SDGs because they consist of a large package of justifications and the nature and complexity of the subject.

The Sustainable Development Goals provide us with a common agenda to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our worlds such as poverty, climate change, and conflict and unite us together to bring about positive change for both humans and the planet.
The population is the main pillar that drives sustainable development.

It is ideal to know its importance for a comprehensive understanding. The importance of sustainable development goals can be summarized as follows:

Sustainable development goals provide basic humanitarian needs: Such as shelter, food, and water by using renewable and sustainable energy as an alternative to fossil fuel-based energy.

Agricultural Requirements: The use of sustainable cultivation methods such as the effective seeding technique and crop-rotation technology, which contribute to reducing soil erosion, maintaining its health and increasing its fertility in terms of productivity.

Climate variability management: The sustainable development methodology seeks to reduce the use of fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas, and coal. They affect the climate and emit greenhouse gases.

Global balance and financial stability: Financial stability from sustainable development practices can be achieved.
The development of renewable energy technologies can create ongoing employment opportunities as an alternative to jobs that are restricted to fossil fuel technology.

Biodiversity protection: Sustainable development practices encourage investment in renewable energy resources and use them. Organic farming practices that do not emit any greenhouse gases in the atmosphere preserve plant diversity and reduce air pollution.

Focusing on 5 key areas of the SDGs
Sustainable development takes place in these main areas: social development, economic growth, conservation of natural resources and the environment.

One of the most important challenges for sustainable development is the eradication of poverty, by promoting balanced production and consumption patterns, without over-reliance on natural resources.

The following are examples of the most important Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through some items that will directly influence people's living conditions:

1- Water sustainability
Its economic sustainability aims to ensure an adequate supply of water and raise the efficiency of water use in agricultural, industrial, urban and rural development.

Social sustainability aims to ensure access to water in the region sufficient for domestic use and small agricultural projects for the poor majority.

Environmental sustainability aims to ensure adequate protection of aquifers, groundwater, freshwater resources, and ecosystems.

2. Food Sustainability
Its economic sustainability aims to raise agricultural productivity, export-oriented agriculture, and food security in the world.

Social sustainability aims to improve the productivity and profits of small-scale agriculture and ensure household food security.

Environmental sustainability aims to ensure sustainable use and conservation of land, forests, water, wildlife, fish and water resources.

3. Public Health Sustainability
Its economic sustainability aims to increase productivity through health and preventive care and improve health and safety in the workplace.

Social sustainability aims to impose air, water and noise standards to protect human health and ensure primary healthcare in poor countries.

Environmental sustainability aims to ensure adequate protection of biological resources, ecosystems, and life-support systems.

4. Income Sustainability
Its economic sustainability aims to increase economic efficiency, growth, and employment in the formal sector.

Social sustainability aims to support small enterprises and create jobs for the poor majority in the informal sector.

Environmental sustainability aims to ensure the sustainable use of the natural resources necessary for economic growth in the public and private sectors and also to increase per capita income for social welfare.

5. Sustainable Shelter and Services
Its economic sustainability aims to ensure adequate supply and efficient use of construction resources and transportation systems.

Social sustainability aims to ensure access to adequate housing at the right price, as well as sanitation and transportation for the poor majority.

Environmental sustainability aims to ensure sustainable or optimal use of land, forests, energy, and mineral resources.
