IIT-Kharagpur Researchers Develop Innovative AI-based Tracking Device to Monitor Social Distancing

Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed an artificial intelligence-based cyber-physical system for monitoring social distances in public places.

The device developed by the researchers will alert if social distance norms are violated. This device captures the images of field view and calculates the distance according to the criteria set by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Researchers at the institute designed the device using inexpensive and easily accessible hardware materials.

Social distancing is a non-drug prevention of coronavirus infection.

According to the WHO, when a person is infected with COVID-19, the minimum physical distance to stay away from it is 1 meter. The same criteria are followed in India. Some countries follow a social distance of 2 meters and others follow 1.5 meters.
